Local DAR Chapter Donates Books to Help Promote Literacy

The Brigadier General Richard Winn Daughters of the American Revolution recently donated a box of books to support the Tennessee Children of American Revolution’s state project “Read to Independence.” Cynthia Baxter, leader of the President Polk/President Jackson chapter, accepted the books being donated.

Reading is something many of us take for granted. But thousands of adults and children in Nashville and surrounding areas and throughout Tennessee struggle to understand the words around them.

“They can’t read a newspaper headline, they can’t read the labels on their medications,” said Vicki James, Regent. “They just have a lot of trouble and they often have to have other people do things for them when it comes to reading something.”

“Read to Independence” will help support reading for children and adults across the state of Tennessee. The books will be donated to a library and/or source that can utilize them.

According to the most recent National Assessment of Adult Literacy, conducted by the U.S. Department of Education, as many as 1 in 7 adults in the United States cannot read at levels necessary to succeed in today’s society. Across the country, DAR and CAR chapter members are meeting the challenge and helping those with significant literacy needs learn to read, gain self respect and confidence and reach life goals that otherwise would not be attainable.

NSDAR was founded in 1890 to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism. Its members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War. To learn about the Brigadier General Richard Winn, call 540-357-1051 or e-mail RichardWinn@tndar.org.
