Maury County Public Schools Educators Selected To Participate In Exclusive Professional Development And Networking Event Focused On Stem Education

Discovery Education Summer STEMmersion Event to be Held at Loyola University in Chicago, IL, Supports Educators in Delivering Effective STEM Instruction

Two educators from Maury County Public Schools will join 35 other STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) educators from across the world in the 2016 Discovery Education Summer STEMmersion professional development event at Loyola University in Chicago this month. Mia DeMello, a fourth grade teacher at Brown Elementary School and Jessica Vasquez, a second grade teacher at Howell Elementary School, were both nominated by Maury County Public Schools to attend this week-long experience where educators will learn new strategies they can use to deliver effective STEM instruction in the school district.

During STEMmersion, attendees will participate in a number of interactive seminars and hands-on workshops led by the Discovery Education STEM experts, local experts, and members of the Discovery Education Community that will energize their own STEM teaching and learning. Topics to be covered include using virtual reality in the classroom, writing effective grants for STEM, integrating engineering concepts into instruction, and more.

In addition, the STEMmersion event will provide opportunities for educators to connect, collaborate, and share resources, ideas, and strategies for inspiring the next generation of innovators and problem-servers. Upon completing STEMmersion, these educators will return to their local communities prepared to share new techniques for integrating STEM into classroom instruction with their peers across their school system and around the world.

Over the next four years, the district is partnering with Discovery Education to help Maury County educators learn how to create problem-based learning (PBL) environments that prepare students to succeed in college and careers.

“As participants in Discovery Education’s Summer STEMmersion, these educators have demonstrated their leadership and commitment to developing a culture of STEM in their school that supports the success of every student,” said Cindy Moss, senior director of global STEM initiatives at Discovery Education. “STEMmersion will allow educators from across the country to not only come together and collaborate, but then give them new tools they can take back into their classrooms and implement as they create engaging STEM learning environments for their students.”
